Start by creating a new repository on GitHub. To do that, you use the following command: You’ll often need to delete a branch not only locally but also remotely. Git branch -D newer How to Delete a Branch Remotely The message is unmistakable: if you’re sure of what you’re doing, run the command with the -D parameter: If you are sure you want to delete it, run 'git branch -D newer.’ Git will show you this message:Įrror: The branch ‘newer’ is not fully merged. & git commit -m "Add file2"Įcho hello world > file3 & git add. It will also display the hash of the commit pointed to by the branch: Let’s delete it right away:Īfter running the command, Git will let you know the branch was successfully deleted. Let’s call it new:Īt this point, you could switch to the new branch, add some commits to it, then go back and merge it into main. Start by creating a repository and adding a commit to it: There’s a way to recover them if you act quickly. What if you delete a branch with unmerged commits by mistake? Are those changes lost for good? Not yet. From the commit that main points to, you can only move backward, so there’s no way for you to reach the commits formerly pointed to by exp. Why?Ī commit has a reference to its parent-or parents-but not to its children. But unless you have the hash of the last commit, you won’t be able to reach them. If you go now and get rid of the exp branch, your repo will look like this:Īs you can see, the commits are still there. Take a look at the diagram the depicts the moment after you’ve added the new commits to exp but haven’t yet merged them back to main: ![]() Now let’s explore the scenario where the branch contains unmerged changes. The commits were already integrated into the original branch: Deleting a Branch With Unmerged Changes Let’s do that:Īt this point, if we delete the exp branch, nothing changes. In this situation, merging is just a matter of moving the main reference forward until it catches up to exp. As you can see, the main branch is behind exp. Go back and take a look at the last diagram. When you delete a branch, what happens depends on whether the branch was already merged. That’s right: The commits are still there, and you might be able to recover them. ![]() When you delete a branch in Git, you don’t delete the commits themselves. So, what would happen if you deleted the exp branch? What Happens If I Delete a Git Branch? You switch to the new branch and add two more commits to it. Now you create a new branch called “exp.” The branch currently points to the same commit, so the scenario looks like this: Imagine you create a repository and add three commits: Branches are named, movable references to commits. What Branches Are In Git?īranching in Git is dead simple. Let’s start by examining what branches are in Git and what’s happening when you delete them. With that out of the way, we’ll now explore the deletion of branches in Git in some more depth. It’s like you’re pushing-sending-the order to delete the branch to the remote repository. You use git push, even if that sounds weird. You don’t use the git branch command to delete a remote branch. If you’re sure you want to do it, you’ll have to force the deletion by replacing the -d parameter with an uppercase D: If the branch contains unmerged changes, though, Git will refuse to delete it. To delete a local branch in Git, you simply run: If you just want to learn the correct incantation to delete branches in Git, we’ll start by offering the TL DR version. Also, make sure you have a GitHub account and are logged in. This tutorial assumes you have Git installed and know your way around the command line. Most importantly, you’ll learn what branches are under the hood to have a more solid understanding of what happens when you delete them. The war ebbed and flowed through the years, but it was increased Western support of the Afghans-including introduction of shoulder-fired anti-aircraft weapons such as the SA-7 and the Stinger-that forced the Red Army to pack up and leave.Īt the onset of the conflict, the Soviets expected the army of the Kabul regime to make large-scale sweeps against resistance forces, with the Soviets supplementing the domestic efforts. On the third side was the fractious Afghan resistance, united only in its allegiance to Islam and its hatred of any imposed outside influence.Įstimates of the strength of the Afghan resistance ranged from 90,000 up to 700,000 in the 10 years of the war, but of these only a small portion was effective in modern guerrilla war or was even in the field at any time. The Afghan Army suffered from internal divisions and dislike of the invaders, who were also their main patrons. A second side centered on the armed forces of the Soviet-backed Kabul regime. One side comprised Soviet conventional forces, which were strong, well-equipped, and well-trained-but for a war in Europe, not Afghanistan. Over the next 10 years, a curious, three-sided conflict unfolded in Afghanistan. It was, of course, a miscalculation of historic proportion. Russia’s leaders hoped that these measures and a potent Soviet occupation force would guarantee peace on the USSR’s highly sensitive southern border. The new regime immediately launched a pro-Muslim charm offensive and moved to blame all previous problems on the former rulers. Other units crossed the border and fanned out to occupy air bases and cities. In Amin’s place, the Soviets installed another puppet, Babrak Karmal, as the new head of government. 27, an elite Soviet Spetsnaz unit raided the president’s Darulaman Palace with orders to kill Amin and every living soul with him. The Kremlin, however, had not played its final card. Once in Kabul, Soviet forces moved out swiftly, seizing key targets, and on Dec. In mid-December, a well-timed and well-executed military airlift, using some 280 aircraft, transported crack, combat-ready Soviet troops to Kabul. These units moved to cover the vital Salang Pass, the invasion route of the Soviet Red Army’s 360th and 375th Motor Rifle Divisions. Airborne battalions arrived at Bagram Air Base that December. The Red Army invasion force secretly began mobilizing in October 1979. ![]() Stress fractures do not always appear on X-rays until they have started to heal when the new bone growth can be seen.Tenderness may be felt when the thumb is pressed into the top of the foot over the navicular bone (called the N spot).Symptoms become worse with exercise, subside quickly with rest, only to return again as training resumes.Pain sometimes radiates along the inside arch of the foot.A poorly localized ache in the midfoot. It is an overuse injury, and one of the most common stress fractures affecting athletes. The AP pelvis view allows for the comparison of both hips so that subtle abnormalities such as a minimally displaced pertrochanteric fracture can more easily be identified. Standard evaluation of pertrochanteric fractures include anteroposterior (AP) pelvis, AP hip, and cross table lateral hip radiographs. Careful examination of the joint above and below the injury of interest should also be performed. Thorough neurovascular assessment includes, but is not limited to testing the strength of the tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, and gastrocnemius-soleus muscles as well as identifying any preexisting peripheral vascular disease or peripheral neuropathy. Neurovascular assessment is also important and should be performed and recorded prior to any manipulation or surgical intervention. Next, the hip should be palpated for tenderness in the general vicinity of the patient’s reported location of pain. Although rare, an open fracture must be excluded. Abrasions, ecchymosis, or lacerations may be found in the vicinity of the greater trochanter. ![]() Visual inspection of patients with displaced pertrochanteric fractures typically reveals a shortened and externally rotated lower extremity. Physical examination of the hip should include assessment of the entire lower extremity as well as any other location of associated injury. Pertinent medical history, including presence of preexisting osteoarthritis or known metastatic disease predisposing the patient to injury, past surgical history, allergies, medications taken, and social history including education level, occupation, activity level, religious or cultural beliefs which may affect care, alcohol usage, and tobacco consumption should also be obtained. Pain in other anatomic locations at the time of injury should also be queried. Additional specific conditions to identify in the patient’s history include pre-injury ambulatory status, antecedent hip pain, prior history of falls or dizziness, and loss of consciousness either before or after the fall. It is important to recognize this delay in presentation as medical optimization and rehydration of these patients is of paramount importance in order to get the patient to the operating room in a timely manner. ![]() In the predominantly geriatric population of pertrochanteric fractures, it is not uncommon for a patient to have had suffered the injury more than 24 h prior to presentation. ![]() It is imperative to determine the mechanism of injury and when the injury occurred.
